The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is a very interesting narrative. It symbolizes the strength and determination of a slave. Douglass' determination is expressed when he learns how to read by observing white kids when they are reading. In addition, his determination is extensively expressed when he escapes from his slave owner and begins to attempt his dream for the abolition of slavery. His narrative is not only a narrative about his life and the setting, but can also be interpreted as a form of motivation for an individual to do as their dream's guide them.
After the publication of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, many Americans, especially in the North, were truly struck by the brutality of slave owners on their slaves. In addition, the writing also emphasized the immorality of slavery throughout not only America, but throughout the world. The writing became a cornerstone to the abolitionist movement of the Romanticism era. To sum it up, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass illustrates the immorality of slavery, the struggles of slaves for freedom, and the need to abolish slavery across the divided US.
My Bondage and My Freedom, another autobiography by Frederick Douglass, is rather an extension to Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass; although, My Bondage and My Freedom is more of a transition from being an ex-slave to an abolitionist and a reformer. Douglass brings out a more intellectual, more professional writer. As John Stauffer sums it up, “My Bondage and My Freedom,” [is] a deep meditation on the meaning of slavery, race, and freedom, and on the power of faith and literacy, as well as a portrait of an individual and a nation a few years before the Civil War.”
I agree with nick on how The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas shows his determination of being a slave led him to learn things that non-slaves learned in school and in social institutions. Also, it shows his determination to become a free man and to continue to learn skills that he had to teach himself to do.
Finally, My Bondage and My Freedom is an excellent example of the difficulties faced by former slave with their transition into free citizens of the USA.
